Photographer's Note
Smallest State, Longest Name
I could post more photos from New York and especially from the photo shoot around the Oculus on our last evening in town, but my previous photo was my 70th post from New York City, so I think it’s a good moment to move on.
The next day, we drove from New York City to Boston. At the end of the afternoon we made a stop-over in Providence, the state capital of Rhode Island, which will be the last addition to my map of photographed U.S. states for this trip, although much yellow won’t be added to the map, as Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state (only 3,144 km2). But, as a proud Rhode Islander pointed out to us during our short visit, it may be the smallest state, it has also got the longest state name, since the official name of the state is the State of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations.
Providence is the capital and largest city of Rhode Island and the third most populous city in New England (178, 000 inhabitants). Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is located at the mouth of the Providence River near Narragansett Bay. It was one of the first industrialised cities in the U.S., best known for its textile manufacturing. It is also home to Brown University, one of the eight Ivy League universities. Seen here is the Supreme Court of Rhode Island, located at Memorial Park. The monument in front of it was erected in 1929 and commemorates the Rhode Island soldiers who fought in the First World War. The church spire is part of the First Unitarian Church of Providence.

Bonjour, cher Lars,
Toujours une bonne note d'accompagnement qui permet de mieux apprécier la prise de vue présentée.
Je me sens plus à l'aise dans ce genre de ville qui reste à taille humaine.
Les grandes tours ont un prestige, mais donnent une impression d'écrasement et la lumière n'éclaire pas certaines rues;
Belle réussite.
Amitiés.

Hello Lars
This particular section of Rhode Island looks like it could have been transplanted from Europe, maybe even Amsterdam! Good sharpness and perspective with excellent colour and saturation. Tfs!

Hello Lars, quite a traditional looking building taken from a good point of view. You managed to include two towers and a monument that add to the skyline.
The planters in the foreground add an extra touch of colour .
Very interesting notes, thank you.
Sharp shot.
Regards Jean.

Hello Lars,
The name Providence smacks of colonialism. You can imagine the immigrants landing here safely and thinking of the most appropriate name.
Your photograph is pin-sharp and has a lovely linkage via the repeating flower tubs and the spires. These elements transport us smoothly across the frame, absorbing all the details as we go.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Lars,
This has some nice feeling of smaller historic city. Those towers and the statue rise above rest of the scene. Row of flower pots is well placed in the foreground.

Hi Lars,
we are learning about the world though your photographs again! This is certainly one of the rarely visited states.
I am really impressed with your US map of visited states. I suppose relatively few members of TE are from the US mainly because it is so hard to tick off a new country :)
Some states are really underrepresented.
This is a wonderful presentation. Great architecture so typical for East coast. Several towers squeezed in one frame. Pleasant asymmetry, nice decoration with clouds and vegetation. Good amount of shade as well.
Very picturesque view.
Excellent reportage,
M

Ciao Lars

Groet Rob

Hi, Lars.
A beautiful corner that reminds me more of Europe than the USA, these brick buildings are very beautiful and the trees and plants give a very human touch, the sculpture and the church tower on the right completes the charm of this beautiful place.
Wonderful colors in soft tones, excellent clarity and splendid light.
Very well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hallo Lars,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello Lars,
It's nice to see a view of Providence. The clock tower, church spire, and monument all stand out proudly against the sky. They create a nice trio. The courthouse is simple but attractive. You really visited a lot of states during this past US visit. :-)

Hi Lars
I missed out on some of these older posts you showed us.
you're right, we don't see too many Rhode Island photos do we, its almost as if this state is forgotten, and what a shame. Its one of the oldest states, the architecture here must be fantastic. lovely light captured on the exteriors, very attractive for obvious reasons. awesome cloud coverage as well. what's not to like!!! I wonder what it would be like driving around as you guys did, good for you. cheers

Lars, the supreme court of Rhode island has a simple but beautiful architecture. It is surrounded by a tree-filled park and it has a clock tower. The statue on a column and the church spire in the bg can be seen from far. Nice urban scape.
